Four fencers from Empire United represented the U.S. at the Junior/Cadet World Championships in Amann, Jordan. Three of them returned with medals.

Race Imboden (17, Brooklyn, NY) placed 9th in the Junior Men’s foil event and brought home a gold medal in the Men’s Foil Team Event. At last years Championships Race won a bronze medal in the Cadet men’s foil event. Brian Kaneshige (17, Maplewood, NJ) also brought home a gold medal in the Junior Men’s foil team. Both Brian and Race are a part of history as the U.S. Men’s Foil Team became the first American Men’s team to succesfully defend a World Title by besting Italy in the final the last two years. Margaret Lu (16, Greenwich, Conn.) finished 9th in the Cadet Women’s Foil event. Margaret also was a part of history as the U.S. Women finished one, two, and three for the first time in Junior Womens Foil Individual. The U.S. women lost a close match to Italy (45-43) in the Team final and brought home the silver medal. Brian Ro (16, Westchester, NY ) making his championship debut in the Cadet Men’s Epee event placed an impressive 10th.

We want to thank all of you at the club who give your best in practice each day to create an environment where these kind of results are possible. Congratulations to all the EUF fencers.

The National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships which were hosted by Ohio State University last March 24-27 included individual events in each of the six weapons : men’s foil, men’s epee, men’s sabre, women’s foil, women’s epee, women’s sabre. A field of 144 fencers, 24 for each of the just mentioned weapons battled each other over the long weekend that just passed. But to get to this Championship level meant a long and arduous journey for these lucky few. There were eighteen different NCAA championships that took place during the winter, each one testing the skills of hundreds of College fencers to come up with the 24 best.
EUF is very proud to announce that 8 of our fencers made it to the Championships, 6 of which are College Freshmen. These College Freshmen are as follows:
April Whitney, Cornell University, Northeast Region, Women’s Foil
Bo Charles, Columbia University, Northeast Region, Men’s Foil
James Weiss, Drew University, Mid-Atlantic/South Region, Men’s Foil
Peter Cohen, Yale University, Northeast Region, Men’s Epee
Anthony Green, Penn State University, Mid-Atlantic/South Region, Men’s Epee
Alen Hadzic, Columbia University, Northeast Region, Men’s Epee
We also had 2 returning College Epee fencers, Nicholas Vomero St. John’s University (New York), Northeast Region, and 2-time NCAA Men’s Epee Champion, last year and this year, Marat Israelian, St. John’s University (New York) Northeast Region.
We congratulate Marat and the rest of our College fencers for such wonderful achievement.
